The Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh, recently led a meeting in New Delhi to discuss pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission for the iron and steel sector. The meeting included government officials and industry representatives. The focus was on the importance of energy transition in the iron and steel sector, highlighting the role of Green Hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions during the steel-making process. The Minister emphasised the government's commitment to assisting the industry in transitioning and addressing challenges, especially in the face of trade barriers imposed by developed countries.

The funds allocated under the mission are intended to support the development of technology for integrating hydrogen into steel production. Some manufacturers have already started experimenting with green hydrogen in the sector. The meeting aimed to identify avenues for utilising funds transparently to accelerate this transition and address technology gaps. Industry representatives expressed concerns about trial challenges, and the possibility of consortiums executing projects was discussed. The Minister urged efforts to identify the right technology for decarbonising the steel sector, and additional funds could be allocated if needed, in addition to the Rs. 455 Crores already assigned under the National Green Hydrogen Mission for the steel sector.
