POSCO has selected thyssenkrupp Uhde to design and supply a new low-emission coke oven battery for its Pohang Steelworks in South Korea, marking another important step in cleaner steelmaking. The project will replace battery No. 3A, which has been operating since the 1980s, with a modern top-charge coke oven system aimed at improving environmental performance and plant efficiency.

The contract includes technology supply, engineering, equipment procurement, site supervision, and commissioning support. At the center of the project is thyssenkrupp Uhde’s EnviBAT technology, which is designed to reduce emissions during the coking process by continuously monitoring and adjusting pressure levels. This helps prevent pressure peaks and limits emissions from oven doors and battery roofs.

Additional design features such as flexible door systems and water-sealed pipe covers are also expected to strengthen emission control and improve operational reliability. For the steel industry, the move highlights how major producers are investing in upgraded coke oven infrastructure to align production efficiency with stricter sustainability goals.
