Tata Steel to Commission UK Electric Arc Furnace by 2027
Tata Steel has announced plans to commission its new electric arc furnace (EAF) unit at the Port Talbot site in the UK by 2027. This project is a key part of the company’s £1.25 billion investment aimed at decarbonizing its UK operations and transitioning to low-emission steelmaking.
The new EAF will replace the two aging blast furnaces, enabling Tata Steel to significantly reduce its carbon footprint while maintaining production capacity. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and contributes to the UK’s national sustainability targets.
Tata Steel's initiative is supported by the UK government’s £500 million aid, underlining the strategic importance of green steel in the country's industrial future.
The shutdown of the existing blast furnaces is expected by mid-2026, with a structured transition plan to minimize disruptions and ensure job retention wherever possible.
