Tata Steel has been served a show-cause notice by the GST department for alleged irregularities in input tax credit (ITC) claims amounting to over Rs 1,007 crore. The notice, issued by the Office of the Commissioner (Audit), Central Tax in Ranchi, covers the financial years 2018–19 to 2022–23.
The company has clarified that it already paid Rs 514 crore of GST through normal channels during this period, which could offset the disputed amount, potentially reducing the net claim to around Rs 493 crore.
In a regulatory filing, Tata Steel stated that it believes the claim is “without merit” and confirmed that the matter will not affect its financials or operations. The company intends to respond to the notice within the required timeline.
This development comes amid increasing scrutiny from tax authorities across sectors, but Tata Steel remains confident in its compliance and has reassured stakeholders of continued stability.
