Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar plant in Odisha has completed 10 years of operations, emerging as one of India’s most advanced steelmaking hubs and moving towards a 16 million tonne per annum (MTPA) capacity milestone. Commissioned in 2015 as Tata Steel’s first major greenfield steel plant outside Jharkhand, the facility has ramped up from an initial 3 MTPA to 8 MTPA, backed by investments of over ₹50,000 crore at the site and more than ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha overall.
The plant achieved full production in its first phase within just five months of commissioning, and its expansion gained further momentum with the start-up of a second blast furnace in 2024. Today, Tata Steel Kalinganagar produces over 100 grades of steel catering to automotive, infrastructure, engineering and energy sectors, positioning Odisha as a critical pillar in the company’s domestic growth strategy.
Kalinganagar also stands out for its sustainability credentials. The complex is ResponsibleSteel-certified, operates as a zero-effluent-discharge facility, utilises 100 per cent of its solid waste, has developed 33 per cent green cover and achieved a 40 per cent reduction in freshwater use over the years.
Through Tata Steel Foundation, the company says it has positively impacted nearly 1.4 million people in surrounding communities, underlining Kalinganagar’s role as both an industrial and socio-economic anchor for the region.
