Finland’s ROTOBOOST has partnered with Baowu Clean Energy, a subsidiary of the world’s largest steelmaker China Baowu Steel Group, to scale up methane pyrolysis technology for green steel production.
The collaboration will industrialize thermo-catalytic decomposition (TCD) of natural gas—splitting methane into hydrogen-rich gas and solid carbon without emitting CO₂. This process offers a sustainable way to produce low-carbon hydrogen on-site, critical for direct-reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.
The partnership is part of a Finland-China innovation initiative, aiming to:
Deliver affordable, clean hydrogen for steel production.
Produce high-grade solid carbon for industrial use.
Generate verified performance and emission data to support global adoption.
By combining Baowu’s scale with ROTOBOOST’s advanced TCD technology, the project aims to tackle key decarbonization challenges—ensuring cost-effective hydrogen, efficient carbon capture, and easy integration with existing steel infrastructure. This marks a major step forward in the industrial shift toward low-emission steelmaking.
