The coal ministry unveiled the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan which provides a database of past, present, and upcoming coal projects and aims to promote thorough planning and project execution in the industry.
According to the statement, the master plan is a digital platform based on a geographical information system (GIS) that involves multiple ministries in the integrated planning and coordination of infrastructure connection projects. Stakeholders will receive infrastructure information from the coal databr's 74 geographical information system-brd layers on the PM Gati Shakti site, categorised under land asset data, coal block, and coalfield border.
According to the ministry, information on coal mining projects can be used to plan and carry out projects in the industry and ensure prompt completion. The ministry said the portal encompasses crucial GIS layers such as coalfield boundaries, coal evacuation systems, railway siding location, and land asset data, providing stakeholders with a comprehensive understanding of the Indian coal industry.
Coal minister Pralhad Joshi said at the launch on Wednesday that the rakes supplied to the power sector for transportation of coal have increased to 392 per day on average so far in this financial year from 369 per day in 2022-23, and the number is likely to go up in line with the fuel requirement of plants. "Though rakes have increased to 392 per day on an average this year (2023-24) from 369 last year, the power demand is too huge, but above all these things, we are at 44.6 MT at power plants," Joshi said.
The power sector's coal requirement has been projected at 874 MT in 2024-25, 6.5% higher than in this fiscal, said coal secretary Amrit Lal Meena. The earlier target of 40 MT of coal stocks at power plants for this fiscal has already been surpassed and currently stands at 44.6 MT, including imported coal.
"The number of rakes has increased from earlier, but in some places, there are infrastructure issues," Joshi said. Joshi said imported coal has fallen to 22.20 MT this fiscal year from 30.8 MT in 2022-23 because of higher domestic coal production.
