Northeastern Coalfields (NECIL), a coal India business that runs a single coal mine in the Margherita sub-division of the Tinsukia district, is attempting to boost annual production from two lakh metric tonnes to 15 lakh tonnes. The Chief Secretary examined the status of NECIL's ongoing projects in Assam with PM Prasad, the Chairman and MD of Coal India Limited (CIL), and his team of top officials.

The Assam Government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is committed to promoting Assam as a sustainable and environmentally pure source of coal for relevant sectors, minimising coal imports, and contributing to job creation. He said the government is also exploring ways to maximize the exploration and utilisation of coal resources to accelerate economic growth.

At present, one coal mine in the Margherita sub-division in Tinsukia district, under NECIL, is actively extracting coal with an annual production of two lakh metric tonnes of coal. The production is likely to increase to three lakh tonnes per annum very soon and efforts are being undertaken to expand to 15 lakhs tonnes per annum.

The Revenue & Disaster Management, Environment & Forest, and Mines & Mineral Departments of the Government of Assam will work together with NECIL to achieve this goal. It is expected that the enhanced coal output will greatly boost state exchequer revenue in addition to meeting the needs of state-owned companies.

The CIL authorities may designate schools and hospitals in the mining districts and work on infrastructural development when necessary to improve the standard of living for the state's mining workers through focused CSR initiatives, according to Kota. The concerned district administrations will supply vital help as soon as CIL shares the proposal in this regard and meets the government's desired requirements for the development of the concerned mining populace, he stated.

Highlighting the sporadic incidents of illegal mining activities, Kota suggested that the CIL authorities, in coordination with the respective district administrations, mitigate such occurrences by considering area-specific issues like coal intake by locals residing near the extraction areas. Further, the CIL authorities also stated that joint inspections of the mining areas can be conducted fortnightly to check for illegal activities.
