The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has requested special permission from the Centre to construct a 68-kilometre greenfield bypass at a cost of ₹3,570 crores to relieve traffic in Ayodhya and the surrounding districts. The NHAI has requested proposals for this four- and six-lane roadway connecting Lucknow, Basti, and Gonda districts.
The two-part project, the North Ayodhya and South Ayodhya bypass, was conceived with the expectation of a significant increase in the traffic of passenger and goods vehicles in the area following the opening of the Ram temple. According to projections, daily traffic is expected to rise from the present level of 89,023 to 2.17 lakh by 2033. The bypass will be created using public-private partnerships (PPPs).
Sources said special approval had been sought as the finance ministry has asked the road ministry not to proceed with any new project under Bharatmala for the time being. They added that since the project costs over ₹1,000 crore, the ministry needs approval from an apex committee that appraises PPP projects. NHAI wants to finish construction in two-and-a-half years.
