JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Ltd. (JVML), a subsidiary of JSW Steel, has commissioned a new 350-tonne Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) vacuum degassing unit at its Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka, supplied by German plantmaker SMS group. The installation features the world’s first operational combination of an RH ladle rocker with fast vessel exchange (FvE), designed to enhance productivity, safety and flexibility in secondary metallurgy.

The new RH unit provides an annual capacity of around 3 million tonnes of vacuum-treated steel. According to SMS group, the configuration delivers higher process effectiveness and throughput than conventional RH systems, enabling rapid vessel changes, reduced downtime and longer vessel lifetimes. The RH vacuum treatment allows JVML to produce cleaner steel with superior mechanical properties tailored to demanding applications.

Nikhil Agashe, vice president at JSW Steel, said the 350-ton RH with FvE represents a “step change” in production capability and grade flexibility, integrating seamlessly into Steel Plant No. 4 at Vijayanagar. The facility will supply high-quality steels for sectors including construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, automotive and energy, reinforcing JSW Steel’s position as a leading producer of premium grades in the Indian market.
