Japan Probes Chinese, South Korean Galvanized Steel Imports Over Dumping Claims

Japan has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into hot-dip galvanized steel imports from China and South Korea, following complaints from domestic producers about low-priced shipments hurting the local market.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Finance announced the probe after Nippon Steel, Kobe Steel, and others petitioned in April. The case covers galvanized steel coil, sheet, and strip, widely used in construction and outdoor applications, but excludes imports from Hong Kong and Macau.

Officials said the investigation will be completed within a year, in line with World Trade Organization rules. If evidence of dumping and damage to domestic industry is found, Japan could impose anti-dumping duties.

Tadashi Imai, chairman of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation and president of Nippon Steel, said the process is being conducted fairly, warning that rising global protectionism and cheap imports pose a growing threat to Japan’s steel sector.

The move follows a recent Japanese probe into stainless steel imports from China and Taiwan, underscoring an increased use of trade defense measures to safeguard the domestic industry.
