India plans to scale steel production capacity to 300 MT by 2030.

Investment, modernization, and green tech are central to this goal.

The move aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and global competitiveness.

India is on a determined path to expand its steel production capacity to 300 million tonnes (MT) by the year 2030, as part of its national vision for self-reliance and global competitiveness in the steel sector. This ambitious target is aligned with the National Steel Policy 2017, which sets out to meet growing domestic demand and position India as a global manufacturing hub.

According to senior officials from the Ministry of Steel, capacity augmentation is being pursued through public-private partnerships, modernization of existing plants, and strategic investments in infrastructure, mining, and logistics.

Currently, India is the second-largest steel producer globally, with a capacity of around 160–170 MT. The proposed jump to 300 MT will require substantial investments, estimated to be in the range of ₹10 lakh crore, along with robust raw material linkages and advanced technology adoption.

The ministry is also focusing on sustainability and circular economy models, including increased scrap usage, green steel initiatives, and carbon reduction goals to ensure environmentally responsible growth.

With ongoing global shifts in supply chains and energy transitions, India’s 2030 steel roadmap could be a key economic driver and job creator in the coming years.
