India turned into a net importer of finished steel in September 2025, as imports outpaced exports, according to official data from the Union Steel Ministry.
During the month, finished steel imports stood at 0.66 million tonnes, while exports were 0.58 million tonnes, making India a net importer for the second time this fiscal year. Higher inflows were mainly from China, South Korea, and Japan, driven by competitive prices and lower global demand.
Analysts said a weak rupee, rising domestic consumption, and cheaper imports contributed to the shift. Meanwhile, exports fell due to subdued global demand and logistical challenges.
From April to September FY25, India’s total finished steel imports reached 3.5 million tonnes, up 13% year-on-year, while exports rose 9% to 3.3 million tonnes. Despite strong domestic production, India continues to rely on imported high-grade and specialty steels for sectors such as automotive, defence, and engineering.
Industry experts believe that sustained policy support and value-added capacity expansion are key to reducing dependence on imported steel and maintaining a trade balance amid fluctuating global market conditions.
