David Pine, New Zealand's High Commissioner to India, emphasised that both India and New Zealand are actively working together to tackle trade barriers and enhance bilateral trade relations. Pine highlighted the need to stimulate demand and foster dialogue between business groups from both nations to explore trade opportunities. The bilateral trade between India and New Zealand reached USD 1 billion in 2022–23, positioning India as New Zealand's 11th largest trading partner. Pine underscored the potential for further trade growth and emphasised the importance of facilitating dialogue between business entities to identify trade opportunities.

While India primarily imports forestry products, wool, and edible fruits from New Zealand, its exports to New Zealand include pharmaceuticals, textiles, and motor vehicles. Pine mentioned efforts to address trade barriers, such as regulations affecting log exports to India and facilitating the import of Indian mangoes to New Zealand.

The joint trade committee of India and New Zealand is set to convene soon in New Zealand to deliberate on trade barriers and explore avenues for enhancing economic cooperation. Pine expressed optimism about addressing trade barriers systematically and fostering closer ties between businesses from both countries. Last year, Union Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal engaged in bilateral discussions with his New Zealand counterpart Todd McClay to strengthen trade relations and facilitate a conducive environment for businesses and investors from both nations. Discussions centred on trade facilitation measures and efforts to reduce trade barriers to promote mutual growth and cooperation.
