Global crude steel output declined by 5% over the year

The World Steel Association's (worldsteel) 71 countries reported 155.7 million tonnes (MT) of crude steel output in April 2024, a 5.0% decline from April 2023.

In April 2024, Africa produced 1.8 MT, a 1.4% increase over April 2023. Asia and Oceania combined produced 114.8 million tonnes, a 5.8% decrease. The EU produced 11.3 million tonnes, a 1.1% increase. Europe, Other produced 3.4 MT, a 2.6% decrease. The Middle East produced 4.6 million tonnes, down 8.2%. North America's output decreased by 5.2% to 8.9 Mt. Russia and other CIS countries, as well as Ukraine, produced 7.4 million tonnes, a 3.5% decrease. 3.9% less was generated in South America (3.4 Mt).

Top 10 steel producing countries

China produced 85.9 Mt in April 2024, a 7.2% decrease from April 2023. India's production increased by 3.6% to 12.1 million tonnes. Japan's production fell 2.5% to 7.1 MT. The United States produced 6.7 MT, a 2.8% decrease. Russia's output is anticipated to have decreased by 5.7% to 6.2 MT. 10.4% less was produced in South Korea (5.1 MT). Germany estimated to produce 3.4 MT, an increase of 6.4%. Turkey generated 2.8 MT, a 4.5% increase. Brazil's output is anticipated to have decreased by 2.1% to 2.7 MT. Iran is thought to have produced 2.7 MT, a 12.3% decrease.
