German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will convene a Steel Summit at the Federal Chancellery on Thursday, November 6, to discuss the sector’s ongoing crisis and measures to bolster competitiveness and safeguard jobs.
Talks will focus on energy costs, global overcapacity, and trade pressures, alongside pathways to finance the green transition in steelmaking. Senior cabinet members, state representatives, industry leaders and unions are expected to attend.
Outcomes from the meeting are likely to inform near-term policy steps, including potential relief for power-intensive producers, investment support for low-emission technologies, and strengthened trade-defence tools. A government statement is planned following the discussions.
