Germany’s Free Democratic Party (FDP), a key coalition partner in the federal government, has urged the European Commission to introduce stronger protections for Europe’s steel industry amid rising imports and global price competition.
The FDP warned that without immediate policy action, the region’s steelmakers — already under pressure from high energy costs and cheap imports — risk losing competitiveness against producers from Asia and other non-EU regions.
Party leaders have called for the extension and tightening of EU safeguard measures that limit steel imports through quotas and tariffs, arguing that these are vital to preserve industrial jobs and maintain Europe’s decarbonisation goals.
The demand comes as European steel producers continue to struggle with weak margins and reduced output, with several companies scaling back production or delaying green-steel investments due to volatile market conditions.
Industry experts note that maintaining a fair trade environment is crucial for ensuring the success of Europe’s Green Steel transition, which requires significant investment and policy support. The FDP’s proposal is expected to spark further discussions within the European Parliament and trade policy circles in Brussels.
