In a move toward eco-friendly infrastructure, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched a pilot project using steel slag for road repairs. The initiative was inaugurated in Mandadam village near the State Secretariat by Roads and Buildings Minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy, under the guidance of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The project uses “Ecofix,” a cold-mix material made by combining steel slag with tar. Unlike traditional materials, Ecofix does not require heating, making it energy-efficient and suitable for use in wet or waterlogged conditions. The material sets quickly, allowing roads to reopen for traffic almost immediately after repair.
Developed with support from the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Ecofix has shown higher durability and cost-effectiveness compared to conventional repair methods. It also aligns with the state’s commitment to sustainability by turning industrial waste into valuable infrastructure resources.
Minister Reddy stated that technical experts will monitor the performance of the pilot project closely. If successful, the model may be adopted across more roads in Andhra Pradesh, improving repair efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
This initiative marks a significant step in promoting circular economy practices and green innovation in public works.
