India’s stainless steel industry is preparing to press the government for a dedicated national policy, stronger import safeguards, and a rethink of public procurement rules. Industry body ISSDA says the sector has matured enough to be treated independently rather than as a subset of the wider steel industry. It is also seeking higher customs duty or safeguard measures to counter rising low-priced imports from China and Vietnam. With installed capacity of around 7.5 million tonnes and utilisation near 60 per cent, the industry argues that unfair imports are hurting domestic producers. ISSDA is also pushing for life-cycle cost analysis in infrastructure projects, saying stainless steel may slightly raise initial project costs but offers longer durability and lower maintenance over time. Domestic stainless steel consumption stood at 4.8 million tonnes in 2024-25, up 8 per cent year-on-year.
