Australia’s steel industry has urged the Productivity Commission to approve safeguard measures on imported fabricated structural steel, saying rising low-cost shipments are putting local manufacturers under pressure. The Australian Steel Institute has called for both provisional and long-term protection, including a 50% tariff rate quota based on import levels before the recent surge.
The industry says fabricated structural steel is vital for infrastructure, defence, mining, transport, energy and agriculture. ASI also warned that global steel overcapacity and redirected trade flows from protected markets such as the US, EU and Canada are increasing pressure on Australia’s domestic steel sector.
With the Productivity Commission’s final decision expected later this year, the outcome could play a key role in shaping Australia’s steel import policy and protecting local fabrication capacity.
