Industry experts have urged steel manufacturers to move toward producing 100% refined steel as a key step in reducing carbon emissions and achieving sustainable industrial growth.

At a policy roundtable organized by the Bangladesh Steel Manufacturers Association (BSMA), speakers highlighted that adopting refined steelmaking technologies, such as electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and scrap-based production, could significantly cut the industry’s carbon footprint.

Experts noted that most of Bangladesh’s steel output still relies on energy-intensive blast furnace methods, which emit large quantities of CO₂. Transitioning to cleaner processes would not only support the country’s climate goals but also improve production efficiency and global competitiveness.

They called on the government to incentivize green steel investments, ensure reliable power supply, and support technology imports to accelerate the transition.

Participants emphasized that shifting to refined and recycled steel would align with international sustainability standards, helping Bangladesh’s steel industry attract foreign investment and expand exports to low-carbon markets.

The discussion concluded that collaboration between government, industry, and academia is essential to drive a greener, more resilient steel sector in the years ahead.
