EU Sets New Steel and E-Commerce Import Rules

The European Union has introduced new trade measures aimed at reducing its widening trade imbalance with China and protecting domestic industries. The move includes tighter steel import controls, lower tariff-free quotas and a 50% duty on steel products exceeding approved limits. The EU will also strengthen traceability rules to identify where steel is melted and poured, helping prevent shipments from being routed through third countries to avoid duties.

Alongside steel, the bloc is adding a €3 customs duty on low-value e-commerce parcels, a step likely to affect platforms such as Temu, Shein and AliExpress. European officials say the surge in cheap online imports has created unfair pressure on local retailers, raised product safety concerns and added strain to customs systems.

For the global steel market, the rules could reshape export flows, increase compliance requirements and influence pricing across Europe. Producers and traders supplying the EU may need to review documentation, quota exposure and sourcing strategies as the new regulations take effect.
