The dry port at Jalna is one of several significant projects across India that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually launch on Today. The facility, a joint venture between the National Highway Authority of India and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority of Navi Mumbai, has been dubbed a multi-modal freight terminal and is anticipated to bring additional advantages to the multi-crore steel sector in Jalna.

According to the Jalna Steel Manufacturing Association, the dry port could benefit companies with a combined annual revenue of about ₹25,000 crore. “We expect huge savings in terms of time and money. The facility will broaden our business horizons with markets getting opened all across the country,” association member and managing director of Icon Steel Dinesh Rathi said.

Undefined around 10km from Jalna at Dinagaon, the project is part of the Railway Board's Gati Shakti Multi-modal Cargo Terminal Policy, which aims to encourage industry investment in cargo terminals.

A senior South Central Railway (SCR) official said the facility is expected to carry the load of cargo movement involving scrap iron, iron ore and finished iron along with cotton bales and other agricultural products. “To begin with, the facility has two rail-level platforms and three rail lines, among other infrastructure. The work of the Electronic In-Motion Weighbridge is also in progress,” the official said.

The official added that the multi-modal cargo terminal in Jalna, which will also facilitate coordination among different means of transport, is expected to generate revenue of  ₹1.8 crore to  ₹2.5 crore per month. Spread over 182 hectare, the facility has a financial outlay of nearly  ₹300 crore.
