Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL), a unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), has signed a licensing agreement for transfer of technology (LAToT) with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) of DRDO to manufacture military-grade steel sheets for defence applications. The pact grants BSL a non-exclusive licence to produce DMR 249A steel sheets, a critical material used by the Indian Navy, Army and other government agencies.
The agreement, signed in Hyderabad, formalises a partnership that dates back to 2007, when BSL and DMRL began jointly developing DMR 249A for high-end naval platforms. Since then, over 46,500 tonnes of this special-grade steel have been produced, contributing to flagship vessels such as aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, stealth frigate INS Nilgiri, ASW corvette INS Kiltan, and next-generation warships INS Mahendragiri and INS Vindhyagiri.
BSL executive director (works) Priya Ranjan said the LAToT marks a significant step in supporting India’s defence indigenisation agenda, adding that the plant will continue to develop special-grade steels for strategic sectors. The collaboration underscores DMRL’s role as DRDO’s key metallurgical research arm and reinforces BSL’s position as a major supplier of advanced steel for India’s warship-building and defence programmes.
