Marking a pivotal development, the government has launched an initiative mandating steel producers to include 'Made in India' branding on their products, focusing the global promotion of locally-manufactured goods.
In a move set to redefine the steel industry's global footprint, Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has unveiled a visionary plan. The government, partnering with the domestic steel industry, is about to roll out a collection of top-tier Made-In-India steel products worldwide. According to the Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia this initiative is a tangible stride towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's transformative 'Make in India' vision.
Uniform Quality Branding
Implementing this move of Made in India branded steel products to the worldwide will guarantee a uniform quality standard for products made by Indian steel manufacturers, improving the appeal of domestic goods to potential buyers. Notably, this marks the inaugural effort by any ministry to pioneer the introduction of labelling and branding for a sector's products. According to Scindia, India's robust manufacturing capacity will be symbolised in the one brand identity for steel produced there.
This branding has been rolled out for select products of all major Integrated Steel Producers (ISPs). With common labels completed for every product category, all ISPs and 65% Indian steel products have been brought on board. “Size and space for the Made in India logo has been allocated for each label. Made in India text will be used till the logo is finalised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT),” Scindia mentioned.
Further he added that the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the Quality Council of India (QCI), and the Ministry of Steel have been collaborating since August 2022 to develop a framework that will highlight the robustness of the Indian steel industry by utilising the "Made in India" label on steel products in both domestic and international markets. He said state-owned SAIL and private sector producer Jindal Stainless Limited will soon start a pilot to manufacture these world-class steel products.
Government's Steel Forte
The Made in India label will be applied to a gradually wider variety of products by steel producers. As the initial stage of this plan, all products should be covered by March 2024. In the following stage, Specialised Steel Plants (SSPs) will also be included in the Made in India branding. The Application Programming Interface (API) integration for Label and QR code authentication has also been done.
The government's aim is to fortify the steel sector to enhance production, meeting the surging domestic demand and supporting infrastructure development. According to estimates from the steel ministry, SAIL's operational capacity for crude steel production is expected to increase significantly from the current 19.51 million tonnes per annum to approximately 35.65 MTPA by the fiscal year 2030-31.
