Turkish steel producers have urged the government to impose protective tariffs on imports of rolled steel from China and South Korea, citing unfair pricing and the threat of market destabilization.
According to the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD), cheap imports from Asian producers have severely undercut domestic prices, causing financial strain on local mills and forcing several to operate below capacity.
Industry representatives claim that both China and South Korea have been exporting rolled steel to Turkey at dumping prices, taking advantage of weak demand and excess global supply. TCUD warned that if no action is taken, local producers may face plant shutdowns and job losses.
The association has called for an anti-dumping investigation and the introduction of temporary safeguard duties to ensure fair competition and protect domestic industry investments.
Turkey’s steel sector, one of the world’s top ten producers, has been struggling with low margins due to global overcapacity, rising energy costs, and slowing construction demand.
Analysts note that potential tariffs could help stabilize the market but might also raise costs for downstream manufacturers dependent on imported steel.
