Germany’s Foreign Minister is set to discuss critical raw materials, including rare earths, along with concerns surrounding the steel trade, during her upcoming visit to China. The trip comes at a time when Berlin is intensifying efforts to secure reliable supplies of essential minerals while also addressing trade imbalances with Beijing.
German officials noted that rare earths and other critical materials are indispensable for the country’s automotive, renewable energy, electronics and defence sectors. With China dominating global processing capacity, Germany aims to push for more stable, transparent and diversified supply channels, reducing the risks associated with concentrated dependence.
Steel is expected to be another major talking point, with German manufacturers increasingly concerned about China’s excess capacity and the inflow of low-priced steel into global markets. Berlin is likely to underscore the need for fair competition, adherence to global trade norms and steps to prevent market distortions.
The visit aligns with Germany’s evolving strategy to balance economic cooperation with China while safeguarding national industrial interests. The discussions are also expected to cover broader geopolitical and economic issues, including the EU’s trade measures and the growing emphasis on resilient supply chains for strategic industries.
