Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has added another feather to its cap by becoming the first Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) unit to receive 'Normal and High Strength Ship Building Quality Steel' certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Indian Register of Shipping.
“The works approval certificate was given to BSL in February for hot rolled coils and plates, sheets in thickness ranging from 4mm to 10mm and width from 1,100mm to 1,800mm,” said Manikant Dhan, the chief of communication of BSL, in a statement on yesterday. The steel BSL will supply under this certification will be used in the hull of commercial ships, a watertight enclosure that protects the ship's cargo, machinery, and accommodations, the statement said.
BSL has long been a steel supplier for various vital naval applications, including submarines, frigates, and dive support vessels (DSV). With this certification, BSL will now also supply steel for commercial ships.
With the receipt of an enquiry from M/s Goa Shipyard Limited against a tender notice in the 2021-22 financial year for ABS grade sheets and plates, SAIL proposed that BSL may initiate the process for obtaining its work approval certificate. “Since then, the research and control laboratory (RCL), BSL, along with RDCIS, Bokaro centre, undertook efforts to make a feasibility study for production at BSL with the existing facilities and decided to process for certification,” Dhan said.
