TATA Steel UK launches research initiative to develop AI-driven low-carbon auto steel

Tata Steel UK has initiated a major research project aimed at developing low-carbon steel using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, backed by a 7 pound million investment. The initiative, named ADAPT-EAF (Accelerating the Development of Automotive and Packaging steel Technology for Electric Arc Furnace production), will leverage artificial intelligence to engineer new steel grades with a reduced carbon footprint.

In partnership with the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and the University of Warwick, Tata Steel will deploy AI tools to analyze and predict how different scrap-metal blends affect the quality and performance of steel. This innovative approach will be combined with rapid alloy prototyping and rigorous testing to create advanced steel solutions specifically for the automotive and packaging sectors.

The five-year project also includes support for 13 PhD studentships, promoting expertise in green steel technologies. Funding is provided jointly by Tata Steel and the UK’s EPSRC Prosperity Partnerships programme, which supports collaboration between academia and industry for sustainable development.

This initiative aligns with Tata Steel’s transition to EAF-based steelmaking at its Port Talbot site and supports the UK’s broader goal of creating a low-emission, circular economy. ADAPT-EAF marks a significant step toward decarbonizing steel production while strengthening the UK’s green manufacturing capabilities.

As Tata Steel UK readies its first EAF at Port Talbot, ADAPT‑EAF aligns perfectly with a national push for green manufacturing and resilient steel supply.
