Activity in the EU steel distribution market steadied in October after months of decline, but confidence in a sustained recovery remains fragile, according to EUROMETAL’s latest Market Sentiment Survey. The assessment of current business conditions held flat for a second month and stayed slightly below neutral, pointing to a possible bottoming-out after the sharp summer drop.

Expectations for Q4 softened versus September as distributors reported weak demand visibility and maintained a cautious, wait-and-see stance. Inventory views were largely unchanged, with most players keeping defensive stock strategies and stable volumes.The assessment of current business held flat for a second month and remains slightly below neutral, suggesting a possible bottom after the summer drop. The Q4 outlook softened versus September as demand visibility stayed low and distributors kept a cautious stance.

Price expectations, however, rose for a third straight month at their strongest positive reading since early spring suggesting moderate price lifts ahead amid tightening supply and potential restocking into late 2025. Even so, EUROMETAL noted that firmer pricing alone won’t ensure recovery without an improvement in underlying demand.
