The Centre has reiterated momentum on the proposed brownfield expansion of SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), which aims to raiseproduction capacity from 5.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.55 MTPA. Union Minister of State for Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, during a visit to Bokaro on Monday, said discussions are underway on the project and affirmed the government’s commitment to execute it.
Varma was in Bokaro to formally inaugurate the 25th Janjatiya Khel Mahotsav being held from December 28–30. During his visit, he also held a review meeting with senior BSL officials at Bokaro Niwas, and was briefed on production achievements, ongoing and proposed projects, medical services, material management and other key activities.
The proposed expansion is positioned as part of India’s broader push for self-reliance in steel and aligns with the Prime Minister’s goal of achieving 300 MTPA national steel capacity by 2030. The plan is expected to involve significant capital investment and advanced technologies, generate ~2,500 permanent jobs and ~10,000 indirect jobs, and attract around ₹25,000 crore of investment into Jharkhand.
