Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled a plan for over 200 ropeway projects, costing ₹1 lakh cr, under the National Ropeways Development Programme, "Parvatmala Pariyojana," set to roll out in the next five years. Speaking at a Ropeway Symposium in New Delhi, Gadkari emphasised the importance of making ropeways economically feasible by cutting project costs and encouraging partnerships with the private sector. He sees great potential for ropeways not only in boosting tourism but also in urban public transport.
Gadkari highlighted India's aspiration to become a $5 tn economy and stressed the need for efficient, timely, and sustainable infrastructure development. He called for standardised policies in the ropeway industry and urged the production of ropeway components under the "Make in India" initiative.
To attract private investment for Parvatmala Pariyojana, Gadkari mentioned that 60% construction support will be provided under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM for Ropeways), which is more than the 40% support given under National Highways.
Anurag Jain, Secretary at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), encouraged investors, noting that infrastructure development enhances citizens' quality of life. He highlighted the ease of doing business in India and suggested that it's an opportune time to invest in the country's rapidly growing economy.
