The 63rd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting was held in Bhopal, chaired by Mines Secretary V.L. Kantha Rao. The meeting discussed 1055 scientific programs for 2024-25, focusing on 392 Mineral Development projects and exploration of strategic minerals. A significant increase, almost 50%, was noted in projects related to critical minerals like REE, RM, Graphite, Lithium, Vanadium, and PGE. Additionally, 111 projects under Natural Hazard Studies/Public Good Geoscience were initiated for societal benefits.
Secretary V.L. Kantha Rao emphasised the importance of scientific rigour in mining and urged increased exploration pace, particularly for Critical Minerals. He encouraged state governments to be proactive in implementing exploration projects through NMET funding. The National Geoscience Data Repository (NGDR) portal, utilising AI & ML, was introduced to stakeholders for streamlined access to geological and mineral exploration data. This cloud-based repository aims to enhance the pace of mineral exploration.
The meeting also featured the unveiling of the Report on Geological & Geotechnical investigation of Joshimath Township, Chamoli District, handed over to Uttarakhand Govt. The Mineral Map of Ladakh was released, along with other significant publications of the Geological Survey of India (GSI). An exhibition on "Mining and Beyond" showcased achievements, best practices, and technical advancements by GSI, PSUs, private agencies, and government bodies, providing students with firsthand exposure to the mining sector.
