The government is actively pursuing initiatives to bolster the labelling and branding of steel sector products in the global market. One of the key strategies involves branding domestic steel products with a "Made in India" label accompanied by a QR code containing product details, both for domestic use and export purposes.
In the deregulated steel sector, the government's role is to facilitate the industry by setting policy guidelines and establishing institutional structures conducive to steel production. To advance the vision of 'Make in India' and position India as a global manufacturing hub, several measures have been implemented:
Notification of the National Steel Policy, 2017, outlining a roadmap for long-term growth in the Indian steel industry.
Introduction of the Domestically Manufactured Iron & Steel Products (DMI&SP) Policy to prioritise domestically made iron and steel products in government procurement.
Implementation of the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy to boost the availability of domestically sourced steel scrap.
Enactment of Steel Quality Control Orders to ensure quality steel products for both domestic and export markets.
Launch of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for speciality steel to foster domestic manufacturing.
Adjustments in Basic Customs Duty on steel products and raw materials, coupled with trade remedial measures to enhance competitiveness.
Collaboration with industry associations and the domestic steel industry to address their concerns through relevant government departments.
Engagement with various government ministries and departments to promote increased steel usage within the country.
