The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is preparing to boost India's offshore mineral exploration, with 35 mineral blocks already transferred to the government for auctioning and an additional 24 blocks on the way, according to V.L. Kantha Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Mines. The statement was made at the end of the "Offshore Exploration: Synergies and Opportunities (OESO)" workshop held in Mangalore by GSI's Marine and Coastal Survey Division (MCSD).

The workshop aimed to increase offshore exploration activities by promoting cooperation and knowledge exchange among government agencies, academic institutions, research centres, and industry participants. Rao added that the auctioning procedure for these blocks would begin within the next 2-3 months, following the recent revisions to the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development & Regulation) Act, 2002. He emphasized the development of procedures, norms, and SOPs to facilitate private sector participation in exploring and exploiting these blocks.

Highlighting the importance of data accessibility, Rao urged stakeholders to utilize the GSI and National Geological Data Repository (NGDR) portals for comprehensive geological and offshore data. He advocated for public data sharing and collaboration among various entities to leverage the potential of India's offshore resources for national development.

Janardan Prasad, DG, GSI, underscored India's vast yet untapped offshore resources, including polymetallic nodules, heavy mineral placers, lime mud, and construction sand. He stressed the collective responsibility to harness these resources sustainably, aligning with the government's vision for economic development.

The workshop featured in-depth discussions on legislative amendments, guidelines for private exploration agencies, and sustainable exploration practices. Experts from various sectors presented challenges and opportunities in offshore exploration, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to harness India's offshore mineral wealth responsibly.
