Over the past decade, India’s steel industry—especially in finished steel—has witnessed exceptional growth. Since 2008, crude steel production has risen by 75%, while domestic steel demand, driven largely by finished products, has soared nearly 80%. The expansion has been largely organic, backed by robust infrastructure needs and industrial growth.
Finished Steel (April–December 2024)
Crude Steel Production: 110.99 million tonnes (MT)
Finished Steel Production: 106.86 MT
Finished Steel Consumption: 111.25 MT
Finished Steel Exports: 3.60 MT
Finished Steel Imports: 7.28 MT
Despite a short-term net import trend, India’s finished steel sector remains structurally strong.
