Building a home is getting costlier as the West Asia crisis disrupts supply chains and pushes up the prices of key construction and interior materials. In Madhya Pradesh, builders and traders say overall house construction and finishing costs have risen by more than 12% in recent weeks, with steel, aluminium, plywood, laminates, copper, paints and hardware all becoming more expensive.
The pressure is coming from disrupted petrochemical supplies, shipping delays and tighter raw material availability linked to the Gulf region. Iron rod prices have reportedly climbed from about ₹50 per kg to nearly ₹62 per kg, while PVC prices have jumped by around 30%, adding to the cost burden on developers and individual homebuilders.
Developers say the average construction cost has moved from roughly ₹1,600 per sq ft to around ₹1,800 per sq ft. Interior materials such as ACP sheets, high-pressure laminates, modular furniture components, false ceiling materials and fittings are also seeing price pressure, making both structural and finishing work more expensive.
