From April 2023 to January 2024, the Waltair Railway Division of East Coast Railways recorded an all-time high in iron ore loading, averaging 14.0 rakes per day. Due to this, the current fiscal year (April-Jan) saw the greatest-ever loading of iron ore at 18.34 million tonnes (MT), a 25.36% increase over the 14.63 MT loaded the previous year.
It is recalled that the Waltair Division has handled iron ore on an average of 11.0 rakes per day in the corresponding period of the 2022-23 financial year. Through continuous efforts for streamlining operations and close coordination with freight customers, the Waltair Division achieved the best-ever loading of 63.6 rakes per day in Jan 2024, surpassing the previous best of 62.4 rakes per day achieved in March 2023, considering all commodities.
The Divisional Railway Manager Saurabh Prasad ascribed the record loading to better coordination with customers such as NMDC, RINL, JSW Steel, KIOCL Limited, and others and joint efforts of all Operations and Maintenance wings of Waltair Division.
