VA Tech Wabag Ltd (WABAG), a prominent player in the water technology sector, has partnered with Peak Sustainability Ventures (PEAK) to establish 100 bio-CNG plants. These plants will utilise methane generated by sewage treatment facilities, which would otherwise contribute to higher emissions and pollution. The collaboration aims to set up bio-CNG gas plants in India and other agreed-upon locations internationally, including the GCC, Africa, and Europe.
The purpose of this partnership is to unlock the untapped potential of sewage treatment plants, converting the generated methane into bio-CNG. The bio-CNG produced will be utilised in various applications, including mobility for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as industrial use, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The venture is estimated to have a business potential exceeding $200 Mn, generating over 73 Mn kg of bio-CNG annually.
This initiative is expected to not only boost local and agrarian economies but also create job opportunities. Additionally, it aligns with the G20 initiative of the Global Biofuel Alliance, contributing to the country's energy security and supporting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Shailesh Kumar, India Cluster at WABAG, highlighted that the collaboration marks a significant step in WABAG's green energy segment, contributing to the production of cleaner and greener fuel.
The process of producing bio-CNG from sewage treatment plants is considered an innovative and environmentally conscious approach, turning a once-disregarded resource into a valuable energy asset. Peak Sustainability Ventures, with its expertise in the energy sector, aims to bring institutional capital to this initiative and explore innovative technologies globally for enhanced efficiency and project outcomes.
WABAG will serve as the technology partner, overseeing the execution, commissioning, and operation of the bio-CNG plants. PEAK will contribute insights in energy-related areas and assist in securing capital for large-scale project financing.
WABAG has already implemented approximately 40 large biogas generation facilities globally, demonstrating its experience in this domain. PEAK manages an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) that invests across various sectors, including new energy, food systems, water, and other climate-related areas. The collaboration between WABAG and PEAK represents a concerted effort to address environmental concerns, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to the development of cleaner energy solutions.
