Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to Restart Blast Furnace-3 by June-End
The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), operated by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), is set to restart its third blast furnace, Annapurna, by the end of June 2025. This move marks a significant step in the plant’s revival efforts.
Blast Furnace-3 was shut down in August 2024 due to a shortage of coking coal. Its reopening is expected to boost VSP’s steel production capacity from 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.5 MTPA. The increased output will strengthen the plant’s position in the domestic steel industry and support infrastructure development projects.
The revival is part of a ₹14,100 crore financial package—₹11,440 crore from the Central Government and ₹2,660 crore from the Andhra Pradesh Government. The funds will be used to upgrade infrastructure and reduce debt, aiming to restore the plant's financial health.
However, the restart comes amid concerns from trade unions over layoffs and delayed payments to contract workers. Over 2,000 workers are reportedly affected. Authorities have emphasized the need for cooperation to ensure a smooth return to full operations.
With strategic investment and a focus on boosting capacity, the reopening of Blast Furnace-3 could mark a turning point for VSP—if challenges around workforce stability are effectively addressed.
