Sweden’s Vattenfall has placed an order with SSAB for 120 tonnes of fossil-free steel to build what is billed as the world’s first fossil-free dam gate, planned for installation at the Stornorrfors hydropower station in 2028.
The project will create the largest near-zero-CO₂ steel component produced to date in the ironmaking stage. SSAB’s fossil-free steel—made using hydrogen and fossil-free electricity instead of coal—aims to cut embedded emissions sharply versus conventional steel. For Vattenfall, the procurement extends low-carbon materials from autos and machinery into large-scale infrastructure, aligning with Sweden’s climate goals and demonstrating how hard-to-abate sectors can decarbonise.
Engineering, qualification and fabrication will proceed ahead of installation, with partners focusing on performance, safety standards and lifecycle documentation to verify the gate’s emissions footprint. The initiative is expected to accelerate market adoption of industrialised fossil-free steel and set a template for future upgrades across dams and other heavy civil assets.
