Ukraine’s steel industry faced a sharp setback in April 2026 as rolled steel production dropped 15.8% month-on-month to 460,800 tonnes. Crude steel output also declined by 25.3% to 517,300 tonnes, while pig iron production fell 16.1% to 554,000 tonnes.
The decline came after a brief recovery in March and was largely linked to an unexpected shutdown at Zaporizhstal’s production facilities. Rising electricity and gas costs, along with pressure from the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, continue to challenge Ukraine’s steel sector.
During January–April 2026, Ukraine produced 2.25 million tonnes of steel, down 7.4% year-on-year. Rolled steel output fell 9.1% to 1.8 million tonnes, while pig iron production remained nearly stable at 2.36 million tonnes. The latest figures highlight ongoing uncertainty for Ukrainian steelmakers amid operational disruptions and cost pressure.
