Turkey and the European Union have stepped up talks on the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), with both sides focusing on protecting trade flows and improving regulatory alignment. According to Turkey’s Ministry of Trade, officials from Ankara and the European Commission discussed technical issues including emissions calculation methods, verification systems, and the use of actual emissions data instead of default values. They also reviewed how Turkey’s renewable energy system could be reflected in CBAM calculations.
The meeting also covered how exemptions under the EU Emissions Trading System could be considered within the CBAM framework, along with the possible treatment of Turkey’s developing carbon pricing mechanism. Beyond CBAM, both sides discussed e-commerce cooperation and broader trade ties under the Customs Union, emphasizing the need for regular dialogue to support balanced trade development and stronger supply and value chains. The discussions are expected to continue as Turkey and the EU work to avoid disruption to steel and industrial trade.
