The United States reduced its imports of rolled steel products sharply in September 2025, reflecting softer demand and tighter purchasing activity. According to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), imports of rolled steel fell 15.9% month-on-month to 1.184 million tonnes. Total steel imports, including semi-finished products, dropped 16.7% m/m to 1.56 million tonnes.
Within the rolled segment, the largest imported category was hot-dip galvanized (HDG) rolled steel at 129,710 tonnes, only marginally lower by 0.8% versus August. Imports of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) used in the energy sector declined steeply by 30.5% m/m to 108,320 tonnes, mirroring more cautious drilling activity. Line pipe shipments rose 26.6% m/m to about 93,110 tonnes, while tinplate imports edged up 2.1% m/m to roughly 93,220 tonnes. Finished steel products accounted for 75.9% of total steel imports in September.
For January–September 2025, US rolled steel imports were down 12.5% year-on-year at 15.09 million tonnes, while total steel imports fell 8.9% y/y to 20.29 million tonnes.
