Toyota Motor Corporation has decided to use JFE Steel’s JGreeX® green steel in several of its key vehicle models, marking a further step toward lower-carbon automotive production.

JGreeX®, launched by JFE Steel in 2023, is produced using emission-reduction technologies that significantly cut greenhouse gas output compared with conventional blast furnace steel. The material is designed for customers seeking to decarbonise their supply chains without compromising on performance or quality.

Supply of JGreeX® to Toyota is scheduled to begin in the first half of fiscal 2025 and will be applied across major domestically produced models in Japan. Neither company has disclosed specific supply volumes or model names.

JFE Steel stated that it will continue to pursue energy-saving, low-carbon and high-efficiency processes, while expanding its portfolio of eco-labelled steel products. The producer aims to increase sales of green steel to the automotive, appliances and industrial sectors, supporting broader carbon-neutrality goals.

For Toyota, the move supports its strategy to reduce lifecycle emissions from vehicles by addressing not only tailpipe emissions but also the embedded carbon in materials, including steel.
