Xiangten Iron and Steel has selected Primetals Technologies to upgrade key automation and thickness control systems at its heavy plate mill in China. The project will include improvements to process automation hardware and software, along with the implementation of advanced basic automation solutions.
A major part of the upgrade is the Contour and Flatness Optimizer, designed to support real-time adaptive control during rolling operations. This technology is expected to improve plate flatness, thickness accuracy and overall product consistency, especially during thin-gauge rolling.
For steel producers, the development highlights the growing role of automation in improving mill stability, product quality and yield. With demand rising for precision-engineered steel plates across infrastructure, machinery and industrial applications, advanced rolling technologies are becoming essential for competitive steel manufacturing. The order also reflects Xiangten’s continued focus on modernizing its production process and strengthening quality control at its heavy plate mill.
