In a significant move towards establishing India's first major chipmaking plant, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran recently announced plans to construct a semiconductor factory in Dholera, Gujarat, with a targeted deadline for talks set for March 2024.
The conglomerate is exploring partnerships with two leading Taiwanese chipmakers, Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation and UMC Group, for its proposed chip fabrication plant. According to reports, Tata Group aims to commence construction soon, with an initial focus on producing mature nodes of 65 nm (nanometer) chips before progressing to 48 nm and eventually 28 nm chips, crucial for graphic processor units (GPUs), consumer electronics, and the internet of things (IoT).
The anticipated initial capacity of the plant is estimated to be 25,000 wafers per month, translating to approximately 700-1,000 semiconductor chips per day.
UMC Group, the world's second-largest foundry with reported revenue of NT$222.53 billion in 2023, and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, the world's seventh-largest pure-play foundry with net sales of NT$3.429 billion in 2023, are headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Notably, PSMC recently inaugurated a $5.3 billion chip manufacturing plant in Japan.
Chandrasekaran reiterated the Tata Group's commitment to the semiconductor venture, stating, "We are about to complete negotiations for the semiconductor fab and start in 2024." This ambitious project signals Tata Group's entry into the critical semiconductor manufacturing sector and underscores its strategic collaboration with global leaders to bolster India's technological capabilities.
