The Spanish government has approved a €600 million subsidy package to support energy-intensive industries, including the steel, aluminum, and chemical sectors, to help them cope with high energy costs and accelerate the shift toward cleaner production.

The aid, announced by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition, will be distributed over the next two years to companies that meet energy efficiency and decarbonisation criteria. The program aims to reduce electricity expenses, promote renewable energy integration, and strengthen industrial competitiveness amid Europe’s ongoing energy transition.

The subsidies will prioritize industries investing in green hydrogen, electrification, and emission-reduction technologies. Beneficiaries are also expected to commit to sustainability reporting and transparency requirements under EU state aid rules.

Spain’s industrial associations have welcomed the initiative, calling it crucial to safeguard jobs and production in sectors vulnerable to global competition and rising energy prices.

This move aligns with the European Union’s broader goal to reduce carbon emissions by 55% by 2030, while ensuring that energy-intensive industries remain viable during the green transformation.
