Nippon Steel to send more engineers to US Steel

Nippon Steel Corp. will send more engineers to United States Steel Corp. (US Steel) to strengthen the American company’s competitiveness. Vice Chairman Takahiro Mori said the number of engineers from Nippon Steel will rise to about 50 from the current 40, providing technical guidance and operational know-how.

The goal is to share Nippon Steel’s expertise in making high-quality steel at lower costs.

In June, Nippon Steel completed its $14.1 billion acquisition of US Steel, a move expected to add ¥250 billion in profits by 2028. As part of its expansion, the Japanese company plans to invest $11 billion in US Steel by 2028, including revamping a blast furnace in Indiana and building a new steel mill.

Mori stressed that these investments will not be delayed. He also said US Steel is eager to learn from Nippon Steel’s methods after the takeover.

The acquisition, which initially sparked political debate in the U.S., eventually won approval from President Donald Trump after national security concerns were addressed. Mori added that the negotiation process itself offered valuable lessons and could serve as a model for future cross-border deals.
