Seaspan Shipyards has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Algoma Steel and Stigterstaal Canada to fortify Canada’s domestic steel supply chain for shipbuilding. The agreement supports the construction of Canada’s new heavy Polar Icebreaker under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).
The collaboration will explore sourcing high-grade plate and sheet steel from Algoma Steel, with Stigterstaal managing the commercial and logistical aspects. This strategic move is designed to ensure reliable, Canadian-made steel supply for Seaspan’s flagship vessel—Canada’s most powerful icebreaking ship to date.
The Polar Icebreaker, officially launched in April, is engineered to operate in harsh Arctic conditions, breaking ice up to 2.5 meters thick. It will play a vital role in environmental research, Arctic sovereignty, and maritime rescue missions.
The project is part of the broader NSS, which has already awarded over CAD 3 billion in contracts and engaged more than 800 Canadian suppliers. By localizing material sourcing, Seaspan aims to boost Canadian manufacturing, reduce foreign dependency, and support green steel initiatives.
Algoma Steel’s recent investments in modernizing its plate mill and transitioning to electric arc furnace technology align with Canada's climate goals while improving steel quality and consistency.
This partnership reinforces Canada’s commitment to self-reliance in critical infrastructure projects and strengthens its industrial capacity to meet future defense and maritime support.
